Overcoming Adhd

Overcoming my ADHD Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (also known as ADHD) is a common condition that affects children and adolescents, and can carry on to adulthood. ADHD is a problem with inattentiveness, over-activity, and impulsivity. Depression, lack of sleep, learning disabilities, tic disorders, and behavior problems may be confused with, or appear with, ADHD. I always had problems paying attention and focusing. I was always extremely hyperactive, always running around wanting to play with my friends and avoid homework. My parents recognized the behaviors I was showing, since both my brother and sister showed them at my age as well, and were both on medication for ADHD. When I turned 14, my parents took me to a psychiatrist to talk about my symptoms of ADHD and see if I was going to be prescribed medication. I wasn’t really sure what it was or how medication would help me with ADHD. When I went to the psychiatrist, she asked me a series of questions, like about my organizational skills, and about homework and grades. After I told her I had trouble getting homework completed, and I was really forgetful and not organized with my schoolwork, she diagnosed me of ADHD and prescribed me on Adderall. Since I’ve been taking adderall, my grades have improved greatly, and I’ve improved so much on focusing and being more organized. I also meet with my psychiatrist every three months to talk about my ADHD and if I think my medication is still effective. The symptoms of ADHD fall into three categories: lack of attention (inattentiveness), hyperactivity, and impulsive behavior (impulsivity). Some children show inattentive behaviors, while others (like me) show inattention and hyper behaviors, also called combined ADHD. Some inattentive symptoms include difficulty organizing or completing tasks, failing to pay close attention to details, and are easily distracted. Hyperactivity symptoms include being fidgety, unable to sit still, and disruptive towards other people. Symptoms of impulsivity include being impatient behaviors. The diagnosis of ADHD is based on very specific symptoms. Children should have at least 6 attention symptoms or 6 hyperactivity/impulsivity symptoms, with some symptoms present before age 7.The symptoms must be severe enough to cause significant difficulties in many settings, including home, school, and in relationships with peers. The child should have an evaluation by a doctor if ADHD is suspected (which is why I went to a family psychiatrist). Sometimes an evaluation by a doctor might even include complete a developmental, mental, nutritional, physical, and psychosocial examination. Treatment of ADHD is between the parents, individual, and doctor, since there are various approaches towards treatment. Such approaches include behavioral therapy and medication.Whatever the therapy chosen, it is important that the individual makes sure they are following the treatment rules as planned. A lot of doctors d ebate over the proper use of treatment for ADHD since it is seen as a neurological and behavioral disorder. I believe that ADHD is a neurobiological disorder, and it’s symptoms of inattentiveness, hyperactivity, and impulsivity is shown through behaviors. The first treatment I’m going to talk about is medication. I think medication is a great way to approach ADHD, since it is a neurological and behavioral disorder.

A Set of Laws Should Be Created to Impede Cyberbullying

A Set of Laws Should Be Created to Impede Cyberbullying Introduction Cyber bullying is a term use to refer to the incidence of the use words, pictures or other forms of communication on the Internet that are meant to harm or hurt another individual. The term mainly applies to such acts committed by children against other children (Hunter, 2012). Where the case involves adults, the term used will no longer be regarded as cyber bullying. It will instead be referred to as cyber harassment or cyber-stalking. Currently, there is no strict law in America barring the practice despite the fact that it has disastrous effects on the victims. Cyber-bullied children end up committing murder or suicide in extreme circumstances. Other effects of the crime that are a bit mild and less harmful include the fact that these children will end up being withdrawn and consequently might drop out of school. There are opposing views as to whether the authorities should institute stiffer penalties on the offenders of this crime. Schools are seen to be the most efficient institutions in taming this vise but the law does not allow them to punish student misconduct that is committed out of the campus premises. So the question is, should there be laws in place to prevail on cyber bullying? The current laws that are in place meant to tame cyber-bullying are insufficient. There are no particular laws made that empower the school administrations to act in response to cyber bullying committed outside school. Children have thus been left to the mercy of nature at the hands of rogue cyber bullies. The magnitude and extent of cyber bullying keeps growing with time and it is feared that in the next decade, significant damage will have been done on the children if appropriate laws are not put in place to tame the vice. Student freedom of speech vs. school intervention The law currently provides for and protects the freedom of speech and expression by students. It is entrenched in the main law of the land. This right however has to be used responsibly (Lipschultz, 2013). The question of how much is responsible is, however, an ambiguous one. It is not known how far freedom of expression should be allowed, especially with regard to child communications over the social media. In contrast, schools have their own set of rules that should be adhered to by students regarding their communication with each other. These rules vary from one school to another but share a common basis that communication ought to be respectful and full of regard for each other. That which cannot meet the minimum requirements for respect of the other students is thus deemed inappropriate and punishable. While in school, cases of bullying of whatever kind is not there. The kind of respect that is ideal between students is upheld and dominant. It facilitates a good learning environment for all the students and gives them a sense of pride regardless of the social status of their backgrounds (Malik, 2010). The problem, however, is that school authorities are not allowed to continue their control of the children once they go out of school. This has been witnessed by the several lawsuits that parents and child rights movements have filed against school authorities for attempted intervention on the children’s’ life out of school. It is notable that in each instance, the cases are hinged on claims for freedom of speech. What these lobby groups and parents done appreciate is the fact that children are safer if kept under regulation on what to do and what not to do over the Internet. They focus too much on the short-term welfare of the children regarding freedom of speech and ex pression. The avenues exploited for cyber bullies Technology has provided several untamed avenues that have become easy for cyber bullies to advance their evil agenda. These cover the areas of telephone conversations, and social media, which currently is the most abused form of communication leading in the cyber-bullying claims. Other forms include the use of anonymous Internet sites that the teens use to threaten and intimidate each other (Trolley, 2010). It is for a fact that there have been several cases where kids have had to commit murder or suicide after being subjected to extreme torment because of the above-mentioned crimes. The bad thing with cyberspace that makes it the worst avenue of bullying even more than the other forms of bullying is the fact that there is some sense of anonymity and little accountability on the part of the perpetrators that make them act that way. There is a sense of zero accountability since the comments; posts and photos posted on these sites do not first go through screening by any authority. Thi s relative freedom has encouraged the criminals to do as they wish with regard to posting the bad content on the web. The level of hazards in the next decade In the next decade, America is likely to face serious cases of cyber bullying in the future. With the rapid and fast pace of technological growth and new forms of communication coming up, it is only commonsense to understand that the frequency of abuse will grow beyond the present status (Kelsey, 2014). It is also notable that several features of the growing communication platforms will make it easy for cyber-bullying to happen in the future. These avenues touch on the areas of the ease of sending and receiving items online that has become the norm in the present state of technology. Communication is made easier by the fact that new inventions especially in the mobile telephony has come with better versions of technology that now allows people to send and receive images and videos easily. An example of the latest invention that allows people to don this is the WhatsApp technology, which enables people to share and post both photos and videos as well as send text communications. Since its invention and adoption, millions of cases where children have abused it and bullied their colleagues have been reported. It is also noted that the prevalence of such cases keeps rising with time. It is, therefore, common knowledge that in the next decade, things are going to get worse if proper laws are not put in place to tame the situation. Arguments for imposition of laws to tame cyber-bullying One reason why there should be strict laws regulating the use or abuse of the Internet communications platform is that the effects of the vise on the victims are too damning. They are not comparable to the infringement of the freedom of speech and expression that such laws will bring. For the sake of the safety of the children on the web, laws should be formulated to tame any errant behavior from anyone of them. It is a collective bargain for the government, parents, and school administrations to have a discussion and agree to limit the rights of the children on the net. The second reason why cyber-bullying should be tamed is that there are many cases of school dropouts or poor performance on the affected children. The level of intimidation and mental torture that the kids receive from the actions of the bullies is not healthy for the future society that will result from the generation (McQuade, Samuel Colt, 2012). A generation of bitter, resentful, and disobedient youths will eventually destroy the moral fabric of the society in the end. Psychologists attribute crime tendencies among the youth to the unbalanced emotions and resentful mindsets arising from cyber bullying. The third reason why legislators and other government policy makers need to draw their attention to illegally reducing the rights of children on the web is the fact that schools lack the capacity to administer discipline out of school. Government needs to empower the schools to monitor the students’ engagements online and solve any disciplinary issues that may arise therein. Schools are better placed since they have the students’ records and that students spend much of their time in the learning institutions than at home. Arguments against the imposition of regulatory laws Children need to grow up in a free society for them to realize their identity. They need an open space where they can communicate and share with their fellow children. It is also important that children be given the chance to interact with other children all over the world in order for them to develop a better appreciation of the world societies, cultures and tap the flow of ideas as a result. The psychology of a child is such that at tender age, a person is very responsive and receptive to any ideas they encounter through hearing, sight, or experience. This justifies the reason as to why children should be allowed to communicate on the online platform under unlimited conditions. Finally, the presence of a regulator over the children’s interaction on the online platform will make them be too self-conscious and a result fear to air out what could be eating them up in their hearts. The occurrence of the latter unfortunate situation will lead the children to express their problem s through other means such as; drug abuse, irresponsible sexual behavior among self-harming expressions, whose effects are worse off. Conclusion Internet communication can be good for children, only if it is practiced through proper means. Abuse of Internet communication is what has given rise to the occurrence of cyber-bullying. It has made the rogue children to grossly bully others and take advantage of their innocence. The government, In contrast, as well as the administrators of these online sites has not put enough measures to secure the safety of the children participants while on the web. This has contributed to the present sorry state of cyber-bullying. In view of this, there is a need for government and other stakeholders to act responsibly and secure the children’s communication online. They need to empower school administrations to prevail on errant students who abuse cyber communication. Parents also need to act responsibly and support the schools in disciplining errant students. However, a more long lasting and sustainable solution to the crisis will be to introduce cyber bullying into the school curriculum and have the children taught the dangers of it as well as how to stay safe from it. The benefits drawn from legal intervention in taming the cyber communication among children far outweigh the benefits that freedom of expression would have brought, thus justifying the action to impose laws.

A Role Of Law In Business World Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

A Role Of Law In Business World - Essay Example Numerous studies have been conducted in order to determine the level of employers' concerns about the law. Therefore, in the study conducted by Robert Drago, Ph.D., and Vicky Lovell, Ph.D.: â€Å"The law makes sense and creates a better, less stressful work environment; We [Bi-Rite Market, (San Francisco)] even took it a step further and pay out any time accrued when an employee leaves our organization, not required under the current law which is „use it or lose it†. What is even more important is the fact that the study found no abuse of paid sick days, but save these days. San Francisco researchers claim that like in the other American States, employees, who have paid sick days are healthier and work in a more productive way. Unfortunately, these policies are more relevant to corporations. Small business owners often neglect Health and Safety issues. That is why for business students it should be known that taking care of the health of their employees is a right way to the success of their company. As far as we can see, in the result of our research, we have found out that multidisciplinary knowledge of business students play an important role for their future professional career. Thus, students’ knowledge about legal regulations in the field of financing or corporations’ management is of crucial importance for relevant regulations of business conduct. Moreover, relations between employees and employers should be also regulated in accordance with international legal regulations.

The achievements of Generals are in the long run more decisive than Essay

The achievements of Generals are in the long run more decisive than the achievements of diplomats. Access the validity of this generalization for the United States in the period 1800-1825 - Essay Example main functions of such diplomats are to find ways round to the protection and representation of their states interests and at the same time to promote and foster communication and friendly relations. Generals on the other hand, are general state officers of the highest military rank usually belonging to the army or the air force. Such general’s main function is the use of military force and regulations to enforce their nation’s interests and representation. This is more often than not through war tactics (smith, 1980). According to Smith (1980) the use of generals in the achievement of objectives during the times considered to be a more sure mode of action and fairly quicker than diplomatic tactics. Where diplomats tactics dragged on for long periods of time, most generals military tactics would take much shorter time periods provided the availability of the required access of resources such as during the period of the trial of tears. The â€Å"casualties† were immense but, the objectives of the general’s orders subsequently met, and thus land obtained. Taking the example of U.S generals Andrew Jackson and William Henry who went to war against Britain in the year 1812, they won against states that used diplomatic means to face them and where some of the U.S diplomats had failed. After the carrying out of various diplomatic resolutions to solve the American problems at sea and to end Indian raids in the west, the state decided to finally employ the services of the generals. Though employing the techniques of invasions and divisions of alliances, they were able to achieve their objectives. They repulsed invasions by the British and broke off alliances between the British and the Indians and hence made the enemies weaker to suppress. The federalists and diplomats who were against the war to the extent of trading and threatening succession with the enemy devastated by the U.S general’s triumphant ending of the war. The Island of Plenty by Johnson C. Montgomery Essay

The Island of Plenty by Johnson C. Montgomery - Essay Example The present research has identified that Johnson C. Montgomery was the attorney general in the city of California and former member of an organization situated in America. The organization was popularly known as Zero Population Growth, and it was extraordinarily effective in fulfilling its targets and goals through the assistance of Montgomery. He later ventured in literature and was able to write an exceptionally captivating book that got the attention worldwide. The book was called ‘The Island of Plenty’ and its review appeared first in the Newsweek magazine in the year 1974. The article was clear in the assertion of its points, and consequently got some criticisms from a section of the populace who felt that it was deceitful. The article was titled My Turn on the Newsweek magazine before it was later renamed The Island of Plenty. The author of the book supports the idea that America should isolate herself from helping other countries, until the time they had enough su stainable resources. Montgomery argues that the isolation is necessary for America to concentrate in solving their internal problems first. The writer has used rhetorical devices such as alliterations, assonance, cacophony and onomatopoeia in this piece. The writer uses alliteration in to emphasize that the growing populace is the main reason why there is food shortage in the world, ‘the problem is that there are too many people-many too many’. The repetition is on the word ‘many’, which has been repeated severally in the sentences. AVAYA Case Study (Marketing) Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

AVAYA Case Study (Marketing) - Essay Example The firm faces competition from large global multinational firms and local regional service providers. The purpose of this paper is to analyze and formulate tactics and strategies to improve the marketing function at Ayala Corporation. Ayala has sever heal fundamental problems that are impeding the firm from achieving greater levels of growth. The company has several marketing and sales offices responsible for different strategic purposes. The decisional power is divided among too many places, a scenario that slows down the implementation process. Another problem is that the company separates marketing and sales considering them separate departments. This operating structure is inefficient because it creates inconsistencies in the approaches utilized to generate revenue. Sales generation is a task that should be handled by the marketing department and it should never have a separate leadership team responsible for its functionality. Ayala has to streamline its operation to integrate sales with the marketing department. The operation strategy of separating marketing and sales is risky because it can lead to internal disinformation, contrast philosophical approaches, and inconsistencies, and complications integratin g different sets of information packets. A new system that gives greater power over sales must be designed in a manner that the sales people are given the freedom to operate with autonomy to minimize the risk of conflict. A troublesome issue at Ayala is that the company utilizes a lot of indirect channels to generate sales. Indirect channels account for 53% of the company’s sales generation. The use of external channels undermines the ability of Ayala to implement its marketing campaigns effectively and to provide a level of customer service aligned with the company’s expectations. The strategy does have the advantage of lowering labor overhead, but it does not allow the firm to develop the abilities of its own

Christology Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words

Christology - Essay Example Although all attempts to categorize the views of others risk oversimplification, it is nonetheless necessary to distinguish between and categorize different approaches if we are to evaluate them briefly and effectively. What does this say about Christian mission I do not mean to suggest that evangelization is incompatible with respectful dialogue -- quite the opposite. Although evangelizing calls at times for clarity about the faith that informs Christian action, evangelizing is not the same thing as proselytizing. To evangelize is to witness to the Gospel, and very often the witness that is required is decency, cooperation in pursuit of the common good, and willingness to profess one's own faith truthfully (Haight, 2000, 103-112). In the context of interfaith dialogue, witness to the Gospel should lie precisely in refusing to take advantage of the situation to make converts. But this is the nub of the problem, since it is precisely the content of the Gospel as it relates to dialogue that is in question. (Sobrino, 2002, 42-48) The refu Christology in Contemporary Christianity The refusal to proselytize can only be a witness to the Gospel if the Gospel itself warrants such a refusal. Christians have always understood the Good News as something which demands to be shared with everybody because the salvation it proclaims is addressed to everybody (Hill, 2004, 93-100). If there are times and situations when going out of one's way to make converts is to be avoided for the sake of the Gospel itself, this can only be because the Gospel vision places a high value on respectful dialogue, even on a dialogue that is prepared to continue interminably with no agreement in view. Thinking along these lines, we might say that in Christ the presence of the alien is welcomed and the fact of difference is embraced-this is the Good News that is proclaimed by Christians when they not only live peaceably with nonbelievers but seek fellowship and common cause with followers of any tradition that honors the stranger and says yes to difference. But if significance (or even the me re assumption of religious superiority) is the natural fruit of Christian faith, then the Gospel I have just described cannot be the Christian Gospel. (Snyder, 1988, 54-62) We can also turn this around and say that if philosophical significance does not belong to the essence of Christianity, what we are left with is a Christian Gospel that demands that the church forswear all claims to spiritual privilege, and rejoice as it does so. So, where does the Christian Gospel really stand with respect to philosophical significance As I have suggested, the New Testament itself is unable to decide the question, since it can be read both ways. This collection of mid-to-late first-century texts with widely varying and at times contradictory theological agendas is unified by its persistent claim that Jesus is the Messiah (Snyder, 1988, 54-62). Some would add that it is also unified by the importance implied in this claim about Jesus.

Quick Stab Collection Agency Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Quick Stab Collection Agency - Essay Example The trend shown by the bill deposit was that the majority of the deposit including the higher bills were completed by the half of the time passed. So, focusing the chronic defaulters with some continuous contact or with some incentives may be useful. Timely bill payment has become a difficult responsibility to fulfil on the side of the citizens. It has got various reasons, like: time constraints, busy schedule, missed on due dates followed by even late deposit. The issue can be dealt quite efficiently by early and repeated reminders, easy or customer friendly procedures for submission as multiple sites for submission, reducing time spent in the deposit, more hours to deposit in the evening etc. Usually, the bill issuing authority or body does not have got so much human or other resources to facilitate at the level discussed earlier. In this situation the authority may involve some other party involved in this task and agree on some share to be paid to the party on collection of a specific type of bill within due time. Quick Stab Collection Agency (QSCA) is responsible for carrying out such type of task in the eastern town. But this company prefers small accounts to stay away from the environment full of risks. This is the situation posed by the chronic late payers. Analysis of this data set... sessing the association or relationship between days to collect and size of the bill as well as the regression analysis to for the account status was carried out in SPSS version 10.0. The graph between the days to collect and the mean size of the bill was a typical bell shaped curve which supported the data set, as: Sample size was sufficient enough to assess the association, as the sample size increases Graph 1: The association between the number of the days and the mean size of the bill to a certain level then the distribution becomes binomial with bell shape of the curve. In other words at the extreme of the days, initial and final days, the size of the bill was small around 45-50 but as the days to collect get apart towards the centre the size of the bill gradually increased. The regression analysis was carried out at univariate and then multivariate levels to look for the individual as well as the collective effect but with control on the effect of other variables for the association of the status of the account. When days to collect and size of the bill regressed against the status of the account as continuous variable they could not show association with the status of the account to a significant level. Therefore, both these variables were recoded to dichotomous ones; for days to collect we made categories at day 47 and for the size of the bill we cut the values at 160. After recoding the variables, size of the bill category although, increased in values but could not reach to a significant level. Days to collect category showed a highly significant association with the status of the account. At multivariate level, when size of the bill added to the model, it could not affect the association of days to collect with the dependant variable, status

Clone Towns Essay Example for Free

Clone Towns Essay There are two main types of town in the UK, clone towns and home towns. A clone town is a global term for a town where the high street or other major shopping areas are significantly dominated by chain stores, while home towns consist of many local shops and businesses. We went on a trip to our local town Dorking, and conducted an investigation to see if it was a clone town or not Dorking is situated in Surrey, at the foot of the North Downs and next to Box Hill. We followed the Clone Town British Survey, created by the NEF to find out if it was a clone town. We walked up and down each side of the high street noting what type of shops there were, and whether they were multinational, national or local businesses. Using the NEF scoring method we then calculated its clone town score. 1. For each type of shop counted on your high street, give 5 points. 2. For each independently owned shop counted on your high street, give 50 points. 3. For each chain store counted on your high-street, give 5 points. 4. Add up the scores from steps 1–3 and divide the total sum by the number of shops counted (i.e. 50). http://www.rgs.org If the score was below 25, it is a clone town, between 25-35 a border town, and above 35, a home town. When we tested Dorking, it received a score of 23.5 and just fitted in the clone town bracket. The NEF estimated that 41% of towns and 48% of London villages could be considered clone towns. The increase in clone towns can cause many negative effects. Instead of going back into the local economy, money goes to TNC’s which causes local businesses and jobs go into decline. Local shops are also more likely to use local suppliers for their produce instead of getting abroad.

Personal experience Essay Example for Free

Personal experience Essay Few experiences in one’s lifetime have the capacity to transform. It takes an event of such immense magnitude to shake up ones’ frame of mind but when this occurs, one’s life never remains the same. Before the occurrence of such an event in my life, I was less concerned as the plight of refugees and I cared even less about the reasons behind their refugee status. However, I soon realized that these reasons were not as far fetched as I thought and that our country has a great role to play in these foreign nations. (Harries, 2004) The experience  During the month of July 2004, my family decided to visit some close relations at a neighboring districts; I had never been in that area before. Our intention was to stay there for two days. Our journey was uneventful but pleasant and we arrived there in one piece. Upon arrival, our hosts gave us a warm reception and asked us to feel at home. This was rather difficult owing to the fact that their house was much smaller than ours. I was beginning to ask myself just how long I could bear being so far away from home. These selfish feelings were quickly thrown aside when I noticed unusual family members joining us in the living room. Some young men probably in their mid twenties entered the living room and politely greeted us. I noticed that they had a foreign accent; one I had never heard before and this immediately sparked my curiosity. We began chatting with them and continued to so for one hour. They told us that they had been in the country for ten years and so they knew their way around our cousin’s neighborhood. Actually, I found out that my cousins (who are considerably older than I am) had adopted them seven years ago so we all shared second names. After a while, I got tired of staying indoors and asked the two guys to take me around; one was called Andrew and the other Gregory. I wanted to find out what had prompted Andrew and Gregory to leave their country that I assumed was in Africa. Andrew was more talkative than Gregory and the former began telling me the story of his life. He revealed that he was born and raised in Rwanda until the age of fifteen. Before coming to our country, he had been living a relatively normal life with his family and friends. However, in the year 1994, something happened in their country to change all this. Their prime minister who happened to come from the Hutu tribe was assassinated and all hell broke loose. Andrew told me that the political assassination was merely the straw that broke the camels back because there were ethnic tensions between the two Rwandese tribes from as far back as the colonial times. Andrew narrated that everything changed in a flash, the national radio was taken over by the Hutus (the majority tribe) and they used it to spread hate speech about the minorities who were the Tutsi. Andrew told me that he was a Tutsi and was therefore a potential victim of these extermination crimes. He explained that killings began in different parts of the country and they eventually reached his village. He had managed to hide from the exterminators because a member of the other tribe was protecting his family in a church. But the exterminators learned of this, and entered the church; they were armed with machetes and guns exclaimed ‘come out you little cockroaches! ’ Andrew watched as his family members were killed one after the other. He was lucky that the bullets never got to him since dead bodies covered him. The attackers went around to ensure that no one was left alive. When they got to Andrew, he had so much blood from other people that they assumed he was dead. The same thing had happened to Gregory. Andrew told me that he had remained under those piles of dead bodies for a whole week. What I learnt from the experienced Andrew and Gregory were one of the lucky Tutsi survivors who were enrolled in refugee programs with our country through an NGO. They stayed with this non-governmental organization until my cousins learnt about their story and volunteered to adopt them. I learnt many things from my experience with Andrew and Gregory. First of all, I learnt to appreciate the peace and freedom, that exists within our country because it gave hope to people who had lost it completely. These two young men had a chance to start their lives all over again because a country like ours was open to their experience. (Hamilton, 2000) However, I was deeply disturbed by the role that the rest of the world could have played in their country. Many people have suggested that had the world intervened in the Rwandan genocide much earlier, then the hundreds of thousands of lives lost would have been spared. This was a modern – day Holocaust and every government in the world; including ours turned a deaf year to their plight. The Rwandese killed themselves for four months without outside intervention even from the UN. This issue got me thinking about our government’s role in peace keeping missions around the world; especially those ones that have the danger of spiraling out of control. The citizens of this country may be living in relative peace but as international citizens, it is the duty of our government to protect the lives of innocent citizens such as Andrew and Gregory. I would never have thought of this issue, if my family had not taken that trip to visit our cousins. Through their kind actions, I began asking myself whether the government itself can demonstrate such good neighborliness today especially with regard to troubled countries. (DuBois, 2005) Political and social significance of the event This event was a revelation to me as I hope it will be to the rest of the class because I saw our government through different eyes. Andrew explained that if there had been outside help, then they would not have to deal with some of the problems that they were undergoing at the time. The world has become increasingly global; through information technology, we can now hear, watch and even analyze political and social issues in other countries. In contrast to the mid nineties, news of any nature can reach individuals in different parts of the world at the touch of a button. Consequently, our country and its citizens are firmly aware of the issues prevailing in almost all parts of the world. The government therefore has a platform for looking into the prevailing problems of the world. While our government has tried giving assistance, to certain countries, it would be nobler if the government extended their role in humanitarian crises of the world by participating in preventative initiatives. (Kissinger, 2001) One such illustration occurred earlier this year when an East African nation; Kenya began engaging in post election violence. The clashes and killings were as a result of ethnic and political tension prevailing in that country. The world did not watch as these people continued killing one another because the US government sent its secretary of state who strongly suggested a government of national unity; their interventions saved that nation. Other countries also intervened and the violence was immediately halted. Our government should adopt such a strategy its foreign policy. It is not responsible to simply turn a blind eye to other countries when there is something that our government can do. Arnold, 2001) Another example of a country at war is Sudan; this country has been undergoing a lot of turmoil especially in the Darfur region. Many western or foreign countries have taken a hands-off approach to the plight of the Sudanese because they have assumed that these problems have nothing to do with them. However, as citizens of the world and also as responsible citizens, it is the duty of the government to ta ke part in such initiatives a little more. We cannot operate in isolation because we all need one another. Had governments in the world been more vigilant about helping one another, the situation in Rwanda would not have catapulted into such magnanimous levels. Consequently, similar events in other countries can also be prevented if the government was keener with taking part in peacekeeping missions. Indeed our country’s foreign policy should be viewed a social work because we are our neighbor’s keepers. (Mandelbaum, 2002) Change starts from within and it then spreads to other parts of the world. If our government was to take up its international responsibility today, then the lives of many innocent people could be changed forever. Conclusion The event that changed my life occurred four years ago when I took a trip to my cousins’ place at a nearby district. During my stay there, I met some adopted nephews of Rwandese descent. They told me about their story and how they lost their lives. This meeting with them changed the way I perceived our government’s role in international affairs because I realized that it is not doing enough. Our government needs to exercise more corporate citizenry in order to prevent horrendous occurrences like Andrew’s and Gregory. If our government had been more participatory, then these Rwandese boys would still have relatives today. (Turner, 2001)

Qatar Airways Marketing Strategy

Qatar Airways Marketing Strategy Abstract The airline industry has been known to be volatile and competitive. It is volatile in the sense that any negative news either from the services such as air mishap, economic downturn, perceived threat of terrorism, the potential outbreak of the birdflu virus or the factors of production like rise in prices of crude oil impacts negatively on the strategic position of each of the players in the industry be it market leader, follower or challenger. The case of Gulf States (Countries) such as Bahrain, Iran, Qatar, UAE, Oman, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia to mention just a few calls for closer attention. This is because the so Gulf states are have the resources and capabilities to compete in all the four fronts of marketing mix which is often referred as the 4Ps of People, Price, Place, Promotion. In order to wean their economies away from declining oil reserves some Middle Eastern countries pursue substantial investments into their aviation sector. The bulk of these investments concentrates on the United Arab Emirates and Qatar and comprises fleet expansions stoked by massive airport extensions and development projects. The million dollar question is how Qatar airways can turn its fortune from being a market follower in the Gulf airline industry to a leader. In this academic work also, we would use the following framework for evaluating and writing Customers: Who are the organizations customers? Products/services: What are the organizations major products or services? Location/markets: Where does the organization compete? Technology: Is technology a primary concern of the organization? Concern for survival, growth and profitability: Is the organization committed to economic objectives? Philosophy: What are the basic beliefs, values, aspirations, and philosophical priorities of the firm? Self-concept: What is the organizations distinctive competence or major competitive advantage? 1.0 Introduction The airline industry has grown to be one of be one of the largest industries in half century of its existence. Its origin could be deduced from the end of World War l but it was not until World War II that saw peace restored worldwide that accounted for the burgeoning of the business. Statistics have it that the industry often airlift more than 1.5 billion industry worldwide and generates more than $ 300 billion in revenue and employ 1.7 million people worldwide (Hanlon Pg 1,2006). Good to note is the fact that the post World War II airline industry are dominated by state owned airlines known as Flag Carriers and the government which owned them often used them as instruments to further their mercantilist interests or to promote their countries status, power and prestige. Airline business in the Gulf States is often associated with government (Hanlon Pg 2, 2006). Government desire to protect flag carriers often lead to artificial market, in which the profitability of the airlines wer e determined more by the competitors that are allowed to fly the route rather the forces of quality and pricing. Airlines suited in the Middle East currently hold 9% of long haul capacity worldwide. They will be responsible for about 25% of all global long haul aircraft deliveries over the next decade (Flagnagan, 2006). Dubai based emirates airlines accounts for the largest buyer, which approximately 70% of all new long-haul aircraft orders in the Middle East. Some airline commentators predict that come 2012, the airline would double its fleet (Flagnagan, 2006). After Emirates come Qatar airlines. The airline has placed an order of 140 wide body aircraft. The expansion plans of the gulf airline operators are shown in Fig 1 within Qatar airways just like other airlines in the Gulf States is part of the government strategy to diversify its revenue base, economies, commerce, tourism and global transport importance. The airline has a rich mission statement which is Excellence in everything we do. According to a survey carried out by Pearce and David (1987) to analyze the mission contents of airline companies, the mission, it showed that Qatars mission statement is one of the best in the world. Amongst 9 points, it has 6 points. Fleet expansion plans of Middle Eastern carriers (as March 2008). Source Journal of Transport Geography 18 (2008) 388-394 3.0 Current Marketing Mix of Qatar Airways 3.1.1 Product Strategy: New Products Existing ProductsServices is defined as involving one party offering something that is essentially intangible and where the interaction does not result in ownership of anything (Kotler, 2008). Applying Ansoff product grid matrix, it can be said that Qatar airlines is still in market penetration. This is because the airline as was shown in the introductory section of the work, has projected the number of aircraft it wish to buy before 2012. The attributes of a company in growth stage of company life cycle is expansionary qualities. Existing Market Market Penetration Product Development New Market Market Development Diversification ansoffs product / market matrix The attributes of market penetration strategy in which Qatar airways are using include Maintain or increase the market share of current products this can be achieved by a combination of competitive pricing strategies, advertising, sales promotion and perhaps more resources dedicated to personal selling As part of this growth plan, Qatar Airways will extend its route network to 50 destinations by the end of 2003. It has recently added Manchester and Rome to its increasing route network. It will soon be adding Shanghai, Seoul and Tripoli to its route network. (Airhighways Magazine, 2005, p. 1). Secure dominance of growth markets. Qatar airlines have been known to dominate the ever busy African- Middle east air routes. The company always has some flights available from any part of Africa to the Gulf States. The topology of the area has encouraged the airline to operate in product penetration strategy of Ansoff product grid. Its sparsely populated area has encouraged travelling by air for intra-regional transport. Furthermore, a high per capita income that is still increasing quickly, offers a base for a strong aviation industry. But there are socio-economic constraints, limiting both domestic leisure and business travel potential. Increase usage by existing customers for example by introducing loyalty schemes .A market penetration marketing strategy is very much about business as usual. The business is focusing on markets and products it knows well. It is likely to have good information on competitors and on customer needs. It is unlikely, therefore, that this strategy will require much investment in new market research. There is no evidence that Qatar airways is investing on market research because they are not expanding into unknown routes such as Kula-lumpur Sydney route. 3.1.2 Pricing Strategy: Going-rate-pricing strategy Presently Qatar airline practice what is called Going-rate-pricing strategy. The market leader in the middle- east airline industry remains Emirates. Qatar charges its fare based on the price of Emirates which is slightly higher. This is because being the market follower, Qatar does not need to disturb the established market dynamism because it might not be able to compete on the same level with Emirates. Comparing the price of Qatar and Emirates, on the same route of Kuala-lumpur (Malaysia) Johannesburg ( South Africa) Price of Qatar on 21st Nov returning on 23rd Dec from Kuala-Lumpur to Johannesburg Price of Qatar on 21st Nov returning on 23rd Dec from Kuala-Lumpur to Johannesburg 3.1.3 Promotion Strategy: Qatar airlines are not practicing product differentiation but it is practicing promotion differentiation. According to its chief Executive Officer Akbar Al Baker he said that Qatar By offering a variety of entertainment options, we are able to differentiate our passenger service through live entertainment programming while also setting new standards of comfort to ensure we are the airline of choice (Rockwell Collins, 2005, p. 1). Some of their promotion strategies are as listed below and experienced by its passengers are as Biggest and best business class in the Middle East Interactive Audio, Video on Demand Entertainment System Largest personal TV screens in the Middle East Electronic seat controls In-seat back massage First Middle East airline in First Class with flat beds Qatar has engaged the services of Global media industries to help spread the good news. Such internal media include TV Corporate Videos BBC Campaign to position it as a premium carrier CNN testimonials from airline staff Sky News reports as a sponsor of the weather service Sponsors a travel show through Al-Jazeera Qatar is a major sponsor of high profile sporting activities such as World Tourism Day, World Travel and Tourism Council Summit, World Economic Forum, Leading International sports events. Qatar airlines was the official sponsor of 15th Asian Games, Doha 2006. The company has come up with a new product called Flying Oryx Newsletter that it distributes to travel agents. The newsletter is also available through its websites. More links could be established to the newsletter through the Internet. The airlines also give away products to passengers that promote the logo of the Burgundy Oryx and Taking you personally, such as watches, computermice and hand towels. 3.1.3 Place Strategy: This places a little impact on the business strategy of Qatar. Qatar airways like any other airways have developed a system of getting their ticket. Unlike the normal businesses, whose distribution channel goes from the manufacturer wholesaler-retailer-consumer. The normal business cycle Qatar airline and other airways are from the airline operators to consumers when online booking is done or through traveler agent. Airline operator Airline operator Manufacturer Wholesaler Consumer Travelling Agent Retailer Consumer Consumer Traditional Supply channel Online booking channel intermediary booking channel 4.0 MARKET ANALYSIS 4.1 Qatar current market Qatar airways is one of the leading airline industry in the gulf states. There is no hiding from the fact that Qatar airways is building on the booming market of Dubai to feed the ever busy Dubai route. Qatar currently targets those customers who considers Emirates too expensive. Those that want a little bit high quality and class at an affordable price. Qatar market can be divided into two as follows Geographic Segmentation: Qatar Airways is currently operating in most of the regions of the world. They are presently hoping to expand their routes to include the south pacific routes of Australia and its neighbouring countries. The recommended strategies that would be adopted in this paper would be based on the on the SWOT analysis of the company. External Analysis Strategic decisions Where to compete? How to compete? Identification Trends/Future events Threats/Opportunities Strategic uncertainties How to compete? Analysis Information-Need areas Scenario Analysis Internal Analysis Source: Adapted and modified from Aaker, D. A (1998), Strategic Market Management, 5th Edition, John Wiley Sons, Inc., USA, p 40 5.1 INTERNAL ANALYSIS Strength Weakness Brand Recognition The airline has been able to build a strong brand that was described by Kelly Kaur, Marketing Director, as getting to know the audience and using communication to build loyalty, stimulate desire, create confidence and build awareness. Consistency The airline has been noted for offering consistence services which was one of the criteria that enabled it to get a FIVE STAR RATING. FIVE STAR RATING Qatar Airways is just one of the few airlines in the world ranked Five Star by Skytrax, the independent aviation industry monitoring agency. The same organization Skytrax also named Qatar Airways cabin crew as Best in the Middle East for the third year running and fifth best in the world, following a survey of more than 12 million passengers worldwide. (World Economic Forum, n.d., p. 1). Qatar Airways are the proud winners of the TTG Travel Awards 2009 Airline of the year. In recognition of the world class service and their commitment to offer only the best to over 80 destinations worldwide Numerous Flights The airline currently operates a fleet of 42 all-Airbus aircraft, which is expected to triple in size to 110 aircraft by 2015. Qatar Airways recently made an agreement to buy up to 60 of the new generation Airbus A350s. The airline also plans to acquire 20 Boeing 777s,with a total value for both orders set to be worth US$ 15.2 billion Age Many still believe that Qatar cannot maintain their high standard for a very long time because they are not too experienced in the industry. Arabization Many people still believe that the airline is Arab based because of their Logo. Qatar Airways logo uses an animal (Arabian oryx) that may be familiar to people in the Arabian Gulf, but not to people outside the region. National Carrier History has shown that most national does not last and they are often abused by the government. People would love to invest so that they can control or have shares in the business but thats not the case here. 5.2 EXTERNAL ANALYSIS OPPORTUNITIES THREATS Booming tourism industry The present surge in tourism in the gulf states is plus for the company to expand its business capacity. Image The Airlines has gained some reputation in the region and in Europe and its other sites Strategic alliances The airline has the reputation of forming strategic alliances with some airline operators in the pacific rim. This can be done either via bilateral with the respective government. Terrorism The incident of 9/11 is a wheel in the spanner of most airline industry. It has greatly reduced the ability of airline operators to attract many frequent fliers. New Entrants There is possibility of new entrants to the market especially Etihad. Etihad has the financial capacity to compete on the same level with Qatar Volatility The industry itself is known to exhibit high volatility. This may be in the form of fuel price, technology change or epidemic and natural disasters. 6.0 PROJECT RECOMMENDATION STRATEGIES 6.1. Market penetration via new products: Low cost Qatar airways have the leverage to engage in more competitive prices that what they are offering presently. They should borrow a leave from what Qantas did. Qantas came up with a low cost carrier called JETSTAR. The low cost strategy can compete in the low cost flight category of the airline industry while the parent company keeps their normal standard. Alliances Qatar airways have the brand image to form strategic alliances with many similar airlines where they can get the benefits of economics of scale. This might come in the form choosing one airline company in the continent to form a loop. They might borrow a look from what Singapore airlines deed as shown below. Singapore Airlines Air New Zealand Star Alliance Dinners Club Avis Singapore Airlines alliance network; strategic alliance, follower ( Kotler Pg 812, 2008) 6.2 Maximizing sales revenue Reduction of booking agents Commissions and other incentives to sales staff add to the operational cost of the company. These costs either passed on to the customers or absorbed by the organization lowers the margins of the company. The company should come up with a structure of appointing GSA (General Sales Agent) in major cities and towns. They might even pass it to the post office to sale for them since they post office has their fixed cost already running. Web Friendly Site The company should as a matter of urgency design a friendly user web site. Their current web site is not user friendly. They should borrow a cue at Airasia website. Airasia website is fast, user friendly and updates every minutes. This has greatly encouraged customers to use the web more frequently than physical office space thereby limiting people or place contacts to the barest minimum. 7.0 Conclusion In its relatively few years of operation has shown that they can ranked amongst the best in service delivery. They have grown from a small company to a major player in the airline industry. They have put in place sound management principle and good chief executive Akbar Al Baker believed his airline was leaking significant amounts of revenue. A series of short diagnostic exercises confirmed his hunches needs continuous improvement. The company has adopted a relatively moderate marketing mix by targeting its customers, positioning the company World Class Young, but growing fast Forward Thinking, open-minded On-time, Clean image Friendly/helpful/warm/hospitable airline. The People is good, Price affordable, Place great and Promotion best.

Platos Meno Essay -- essays research papers

The dialogue opens up with Meno asking what virtue is and whether it could be taught. Socrates asks Meno for a general definition of virtue, since as Socrates points out, we cannot figure out if virtue can be taught if we do not have a clear idea what it is. Socrates is looking for a general, or formal definition of virtue, not just examples or instances of it. Socrates wants to know what all the examples of virtue have in common. He wants to know the essence of virtue. Meno initially offers a list of virtues, but Socrates rejects this as a sufficient account. Meno also states that there are different virtues for everyone. The virtue of a man is to order a state and the virtue of a woman is to order a household. I believe that virtue can be found in everything, good, bad, or ugly.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Meno makes an interesting point. How will one know when they find virtue if they do not know virtue? The Socratic paradox is Socrates’ visible claim that virtue is a kind of knowledge, and vice a kind of ignorance. It is a paradox because people usually think a person can know the good and still fail to do it. That is, people usually think that virtue is more than a matter of knowing, it is also a matter of willing. Socrates says that if virtue were knowledge, then anybody who really knew the good would automatically be good. Indeed if Socrates is right that virtue is knowledge, it would be impossible to know the good and not to be good. For example, Christians know s...

Factors that Lead to Teen Pregnancy Essay -- Teen Pregnant Pregnancy E

Factors that Lead to Teen Pregnancy Although the overall rate of teen pregnancy has been declining, the rates have remained high for teens that are most vulnerable. The great majority of Americans believe that teen pregnancies are a serious national problem, indeed a problem that is the major component of what is thought to be national moral decline. However, what causes these teens to become pregnant at such a young age? A large body of research has identified a number of factores that underlie teen sexual and contraceptive behavior, pregnancy, and childbearing. There exists a three part framework of the factors underlying teen pregnancy. There are biological antecedents, including gender, age, testosterone level, and timing of puberty. These factors are causally related to adolescent sexual and contraceptive behavior and pregnancy. A second group of antecedents can be viewed as â€Å"manifestations of social disorganization or advantage† (Kirby, 1997). These include factors in the community and the family such as violent crime, poverty, unemployment, family marital disruption, parents’ lack of education, poor child rearing practice, lack of parental support, and inappropriate sexual pressure or abuse. The second group also includes factors in the individual teen such as lack of religious affiliation, drug and alcohol use, engaging in risk behaviors and deviance, delinquency, poor educational performance, and low expectations for the future. A third group of antecedents are attitudes and beliefs about sexual behavior and pregnancy. These include beliefs, personal values, and perceived norms. Among the many factors which may lead to teen pregnancy, the four that are most predictive of early pregnancy are poverty, early behavioral problems, family problems, and a low self esteem. There are several theories about the reasons why so many young women in poverty become pregnant and carry to full term. Faced with an unintended pregnancy, many teens living in poverty are likely to view early childbearing as a positive, desirable choice. These teens feel that becoming pregnant may in fact improve their lives. Economics may also be responsible for the lower percentage of poor teens who terminate their pregnancies, since Medicaid policies in most states do not pay for abortions, but do pay for services related to childbirth. In addition, some re... ...hildren who are less likely to have early intercourse." Early childhood experiences can make all the difference. Higher levels of parent to teen communication have been related to less permissive sexual attitudes, whereas poor communication with parents and lack of parental support has been linked to earlier initiation of sexual activity. Both high levels of parental supervision and close relationships between adolescents and their parents were related to later timing of teen sexual activity. In addition, parental marital disruption and living with a single parent is associated with the early onset of sexual behavior. This finding probably reflects such factors as lower family incomes, less partental supervision, and parental modeling. The large, complicated, and interrelated accumulation of factors suggest that the course that leads to adolescent sexual activity and pregnancy is complex. Kirby states that â€Å"not merely one or two, but a multitude of antecedents are related to one or more sexual behaviors and pregnancy, including characteristics of the teens themselves, their peers and sexual partners, their families and their communities and states† (Kirby, 1997).

A Distinction between Sex Tourism and Romance Tourism Essay

Introduction Tourism is can be described as an activity that is characterized by taking a trip primarily for the purpose of leisure. The duration of the trip usually lasts from just a few days to several weeks. This involves visiting famous and historical places, experiencing the culture, traditions, food, and weather conditions that a certain spot has to offer. Thesis Statement As the world has gotten smaller with the advent of transportation and modern technology, the tourists of today have grown to be more cultured and thus more demanding. They know what they want. Tourists nowadays would like their travel agents to be able to offer destinations and services that would cater to their specific needs. This is where niche tourism comes in. (Wikipedia the free encyclopedia, 2007) See more: Homeless satire essay   Ã‚  As the popular expression in the world of marketing says, â€Å"sex sells†, sex indeed sells, and is among the specific needs that the travel industry caters to. Niche Tourism Niche Tourism is tourism that not only affords the tourist the luxury of travelling to certain places. Apart from booking a destination and arranging for transfers and accommodation, niche tourism caters to specific needs of discriminating clients. There is something for everyone.   (Wikipedia the free encyclopedia, 2007) Categories of niche tourism include but are not limited to the following:   Sports-oriented or physical activity niche tourism, learning-oriented, lifestyle-oriented and other miscellaneous types.   (Wikipedia the free encyclopedia, 2007)      Sports-oriented or physical activity niche tourism includes activities such as hiking, mountaineering, backpacking, skiing, golf, and diving.   For the ultimate risk taker, there is extreme tourism is offered where activities such as base jumping, bungee jumping and other high-risk activities are offered.   For the intellectual types,   there is learning-oriented niche tourism which offers walking tours, bookstore tours, creative workshops, hobby tourism, and ancestry tourism, among others. Wine tours, gay tours, medical tours and accessible tourism, which caters to people with special needs all fall under lifestyle tourism. (Wikipedia the free encyclopedia, 2007) Falling under the miscellaneous types of niche tourism are perhaps among the interesting and controversial types such as drug tourism (such as going purposely to Amsterdam to be able to use drugs freely), pilgrimages, space tourism and sex tourism. Legality of Sex Tourism Some countries consider prostitution legal. Chances are sex tourism is also legal in these places. However, unlike other crimes, prostitute is not regarded with the same level of disdain. The issues raised are more from a moral standpoint. Nations that are known to be extremely religious and that   tend to be absolutely against any form of prostitution. However, prostitution may still exist subversively. For example, a regular-looking spa could be a cover up for a prostitution den that comes alive once deep inside the establishment. When caught perpetrators are made to pay dearly for their crime. Although more people have become open-minded with regard to prostitution over the years, many draw the line when prostitution already involves the use of minors and innocent children. This has been a cause for alarm and many human rights groups have been involved in the fight against child prostitution, especially the type that involves child molesters. Efforts to attempt to wage war with this type of abuse have carried out, however many despicable but seemingly harmless individuals are still able to get away with this form of wickedness. This can be attributed to the fact that life has been hard for most of the people who become involved in this trade. They see prostitution as their way out. Unfortunately, a majority of them are young girls who willingly fall victim to this vicious cycle. Instead of staying in school, they get involved in the flesh trade with hopes of leading their families towards a better future. They allow themselves to fall prey to unscrupulous individuals who take advantage of their situation.   (Hall & Ryan, 2001) Amsterdam is an example of a place where prostitution, not to mention drugs, is legal. When in Amsterdam, it is common to see people in the sex industry openly â€Å"peddling† their wares and common to see potential clients â€Å"window shopping†. Difference between sex tourism and romance tourism The difference between sex tourism and romance tourism is the objective of going on the trip. The main goal of sex tourism is to go to a certain place and be able to avail of sexual intercourse. Clients who prefer romance tourism, on the other hand, go on such trips to find companionship and sex is not necessarily a part of the equation.   More often, women prefer romance tourism and men tend to favor sex tours. Male sex tourism Among the types of sex tourism, male sex tourism is perhaps the most proliferative and the most widely accepted. It is in fact normal to see men in girly bars mingling with girls hoping for a fling or a one-night stand.   In male sex tourism, sex is a plays a major role. Female sex tourism – Origins Sex tourism particularly female sex tourism proliferated during the Victorian era. Coincidentally it was during that time that feminism gained popularity. Female sex tourism first became known in England, in other parts of Europe and then later in the United States.   (Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, 2007) Female sex tourism is also known as romance tourism. The reason for this alternative term is that the aim of female sex tourism is not aimed mainly to be able to avail of sexual intercourse. The main purpose of women clients for going on such trips is to attempt to form a relationship based on affection. Female sex tours are real tours wherein the women book flights and   accomodations with hopes of finding companionship with male escorts at their destination. Sex may or may not be part of the package. More often, what happens depends upon the discretion of the female client. Payments come in kind where women would shower the male escorts with extravagants gifts of clothes, meals at expensive restaurants.   Cash payments are also given; they vary on the â€Å"going rate† at certain destinations. The usual rate ranges from $50 to $200 a night. There are few, rare destinations where men don’t expect to be paid. Places that are known for this are Southern Europe, Turkey, Bali and the French Caribbean. (Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, 2007) Although female sex tours are available, majority of societies still frown on women who go looking for companionship in this way. There is still that double standard in society wherein it is perfectly fine for men to freely engage in sexual relations but an abomination for a woman to be caught in such a situation. Terms Identified with Female sex tourists The proliferation of sex tourism as an industry has resulted in the emergence of terms or jargon. Just like the rates, the names vary depending on the place. The terms are somewhat amusing, for example, female sex tourists are called ‘milk bottles’   in Jamaica especially if they are fresh from a trip, British call them ‘Shirley Valentines’, black female sex tourists are called Stellas and many others. (Wikipedia the free encyclopedia, 2007) Likewise, the male escorts who render this type of service to these clients also have names. The Caribbean calls them several names from rent-a-gents to the Foreign Service. Greeks call them ‘kamakia’ which means fishing harpoons. Costa Rica calls them sharks. Peru calls them ‘brichero’.(Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, 2007) Destinations The preferred destinations for male sex tourism are Latin America and East Asia. The reason for this is that a majority of men who engage in sex tourism tend to prefer women who are exotic looking and are more aware of their sensuality.   Not to mention that men in relationship going about their extramural or extramarital sexual activities in faraway places ensures that the chances of them getting caught is very little to zero.   A secondary reason is that a lot of people from these places have sort of welcomed the sex industry as their means of survival.   (Sex Tourism )   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The preferred destinations for female sex tourism are Southern Europe, the Caribbean and Africa.   The reason for this preference is that like men, women are drawn to certain physical characteristics and personality traits that only men from these regions possess.   (Sex Tourism) Best Countries to go for Sex tourism In Asia, Thailand is one of the most popular haunts for sex tourism. High-end brothels are situated in extremely progressive tourist spots like Phuket, Bangkok and Pattaya.   (Sex Tourism) Taiwan, South Korea and Vietnam are similarly popular places in Asia. An interesting fact about Vietnam as a sex tourism spot is that freelance prostitutes are easily recognizable. Prostitutes in Saigon sport pale faces, making them easy to distinguish from the regular woman.   (Sex Tourism ) Another selling point for sex tourism in this region is that the price ranges are affordable compared to other parts of Asia like the Philippines where similar services in Manila are quite expensive.   (Sex Tourism) The Caribbean and Latin America are known as the best. Brazil is considered as a cut above the rest for its beautiful women. Brazilian people are generally warm and although prostitution is considered illegal, people who operate bath houses and bars are armed to the teeth with information for clients who opt to avail of prostitution â€Å" services†.   (Sex Tourism ) The Netherlands is the best in terms of accessibility. Prostitution is very much legal in Amsterdam. Perhaps one of the best testaments to this is the famous Casa Rosso. Casa Rosso is a well-known sex theater located in the red light district of the city.   (Sex Tourism ) In Eastern Europe, the Czech Republic is one of the best places for sex tourism. The Czech Republic has Prague which is famous for its clubs. Ukraine and Russia are known for romantic tours. (Sex Tourism ) Austria is another example of regulated prostitution, much like Amsterdam. However, Austria has set regulations for example, they forbid young men and women who are under the age of 18 to engage in prostitution. Having sexual relations with a minor is considered sexual abuse. Individuals engaging in the sex industry are required to be regularly tested for HIV, AIDs and STDs. Prostitutes are considered as self-employed individuals and are     obliged to pay taxes. (Sex Tourism ) Worst Countries to go for sex tourism The United States is among the worst destinations for sex tourism. Prostitution is illegal for the most part of this country.   (Sex Tourism ) Middle Eastern countries where Islam is largely practiced totally prohibits prostitution. Women are highly respected and are not even allowed to go out alone in public in some places. Their culture also dictates that their women should wear appropriate clothing and something that bares much skin is not favored.   (Sex Tourism ) In Europe, Germany, France and England are not known for prostitution. Like the prices of most commodities in these places, rates of prostitution are exceedingly expensive. In Israel, most women who work in this industry are much older women and are foreigners. Like the prices in Europe, rates for prostitution in Israel are also high. Conclusion The advent of modern conveniences and the information age has brought about numerous developments in all aspects of life. Sexuality is not left out. Human beings have become more particular with their wants and needs. People have become more open-minded and liberal about their opinions regarding many things that were once forbidden and unheard of. The proliferation of sex tourism is one of the results of these progressions. In spite of all these liberties, it is important to be responsible of one’s own actions. People who would settle on experiencing these liberties should also be aware of their limits. If these freedoms are abused, they are in danger of being taken away. It is important to weigh the consequences of such precarious actions. A lot of factors need to be considered. An individual considering on embarking on such an activity should realize that once it is done, it will be difficult to turn back and reverse the possible repercussions. First, one must consider the effect such activities may have on his relationships. Should a committed man or woman engage in extramarital affairs, once he or she is caught, the incident will cause a major strain that could be beyond repair. Second, one must consider the physical consequences. Engaging in sexual promiscuity without the proper protection could lead to one contracting sexually transmitted diseases that are potentially deadly. Moreover, one could end up with unwanted pregnancy which could completely alter a person’s life. Third, one should think about the moral implications of   taking on such activities. A person may be able to get away with so much during   his lifetime but he may forever be   disconcerted by his conscience. References Hall, C. M., & Ryan, C. (2001).
